About Me

I am a media relations expert, a writer, and an editor with two decades of professional experience. From an early age I knew I wanted to be a writer, and I am so grateful for all the ways that has brought me into contact with smart, passionate people.

I spent the first decade of my career working in political journalism and public policy communications in Washington, D.C. My first job out of college was researching for the Almanac of American Politics, a training ground for some of the best political journalists in the U.S. I traveled with a presidential candidate as a campaign embed during the 2007 primary elections and later worked as an editorial assistant and staff writer at Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill. The media outlets I worked for targeted a specific audience of insiders who cared deeply about the minutiae of politics and policy.

Then I switched to working in external affairs, first at a small think tank focused on national security issues and then at a larger think tank focused more broadly on foreign policy. I love the challenge of thinking about which audiences care about which issues and how we can bring our message to them most effectively, whether it’s through traditional media outreach, online influencers, in-person events, or publications.

Now I work as a media relations consultant and as a freelance writer and editor. As a media relations consultant I come alongside small to midsize nonprofits on a short-term basis to help promote their programs, research, or events. My ideal client is a local organization working in support of a population with a defined need.

As a writer and editor, I work with research universities, foundations, associations, and nonprofits to tell their success stories in alumni magazines, marketing materials, and annual reports. I love interviewing faculty and alumni about the ways they use their expertise to make the world better. I am an expert on adapting content for different audiences, and I am careful to make sure every piece lives up to my clients’ standards and expectations.

I live in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh with my husband and two kids. I am originally from northern Iowa and bring that Midwestern work ethic to everything I do. I love reading books, eating cheese, and trying new things with my kids.
